IPH Emerald health plans for expats in the Gulf and Europe
IPH's Emerald plan is an individual international health insurance with three benefit levels, Core, Advance and Deluxe, published in US dollar and sterling schedules. IPMIEMEA explains how the three levels differ and how the plan fits expats in the Gulf and Europe.
- Core has no general or specialist outpatient benefit, so it is a hospital-and-cancer plan where you pay for consultations yourself.
- Deluxe doubles Advance's stem-cell lifetime limit, raises the hospice limit to $/£50,000 and extends home nursing to 26 weeks.
- Emergency evacuation, repatriation and local ambulance are published on all three levels, so evacuation does not drive the choice.
- There is no euro schedule, so residents of Spain, Portugal or Germany carry exchange risk in dollars or sterling.
- Area of cover, deductibles, underwriting and pre-authorisation rules are only in the full policy, so request it before buying.
Core, Advance and Deluxe side by side
IPH Emerald is IPH's individual international private medical insurance (IPMI), positioned for private healthcare either abroad or locally. The three levels share the same hospital core and differ mainly in outpatient cover and in a handful of lifetime and duration limits.
| Benefit | Core | Advance | Deluxe |
|---|---|---|---|
| Hospital and day-care | Full refund, subject to policy | Full refund, subject to policy | Full refund, subject to policy |
| General and specialist outpatient | Not included | Full refund, subject to policy | Full refund, subject to policy |
| Cancer and organ transplant | Full refund, subject to policy | Full refund, subject to policy | Full refund, subject to policy |
| Hospice lifetime limit | $/£25,000 | $/£30,000 | $/£50,000 |
| Stem-cell treatment lifetime limit | Not included | $/£75,000 | $/£150,000 |
| Home nursing | Up to 4 weeks | Up to 8 weeks | Up to 26 weeks |
"Full refund" is not the same as "no limit". It remains subject to the policy's conditions, overall limits, reasonable and customary charges and any restrictions marked in the schedule.
How to choose a level
The first decision is the same one that separates most international plans: do you want outpatient cover or not? Core is a hospital-and-cancer plan with no general or specialist outpatient benefit, so you pay for consultations yourself and insure the large events. Advance adds outpatient at full refund, subject to the policy, and is the natural level for anyone who sees a doctor more than occasionally. Our guide to inpatient versus outpatient cover walks through that choice.
Deluxe is distinguished less by headline cover than by the long-tail benefits: a higher hospice lifetime limit, double the stem-cell lifetime limit of Advance, home nursing for up to 26 weeks, and benefits including treatment of congenital conditions. Those matter most to families and to anyone thinking about the aftermath of a serious illness rather than the admission itself.

What the published material does and does not say
The plan overview supplies the benefit comparison above, and IPH's site links separate "How it works" and FAQ material. The current full policy is the only source for eligibility, area of cover, deductible options, underwriting, exclusions and pre-authorisation rules, none of which are summarised in the overview. No network total, named partnership or average approval time is published in the material behind this page, so none is claimed here. Before you buy, ask for the full policy and read the underwriting terms; our guide to pre-existing conditions explains what to look for.
Using IPH Emerald from the Gulf or Europe
The sterling schedule is the feature that stands out for IPMIEMEA readers. A resident of the United Kingdom, or a British expat in the UAE, Qatar or Bahrain who still thinks in pounds, can hold limits that do not move with the dollar. The dollar schedule suits anyone paid in dollars or dollar-pegged currencies, which includes much of the Gulf. There is no euro schedule, so a resident of Spain, Portugal or Germany would hold the plan in dollars or sterling and carry the exchange risk.
The overview does not state the area-of-cover options, so whether the USA is included, and whether a narrower regional area exists, must be confirmed from the full policy at quote. Our guide to Europe regional versus worldwide cover sets out the questions to ask.
Gulf residents, including those in Saudi Arabia, generally need a locally compliant policy, usually arranged by the employer, with an international plan bought on top or by people outside the local scheme. A hospital-focused level like Core is a typical top-up shape for someone whose local policy covers routine care. Check the current rule where you live and read our guide to mandatory Gulf health insurance and top-up cover.
Who IPH Emerald suits
A good fit for someone who wants a straightforward three-level plan with full-refund hospital and cancer cover at every level, a sterling or dollar schedule, and a clear step up to outpatient and long-tail benefits at Advance and Deluxe. Compare alternatives if you need a euro plan, if you want the area, deductible and underwriting options in front of you before quoting, or if you want a longer tier ladder. Nomi prices IPH beside the rest of the market for your details; Expatriate Healthcare and Optimum Global are other sterling-capable insurers to read.
