HCI NIMBL Health for expats in the Gulf and Europe

In short: HCI NIMBL Health is a modular expatriate plan administered by HealthCare International and underwritten by MGEN. You pick a core annual cap from US$250,000 to US$3,000,000 and a deductible from nil to US$10,000, then add outpatient, dental and evacuation modules as needed. It suits fully underwritten expats aged 64 or under living outside their country of nationality, particularly as a top-up over local Gulf cover.
Key takeaways
  • The US$250,000 core cap is a top-up or catastrophe layer; US$1,000,000 to US$3,000,000 suits a main plan.
  • Evacuation is an optional module, not part of the core, and its benefits are subject to the core cap you select.
  • Eligibility requires living outside your country of nationality with a maximum entry age of 64, so nationals at home cannot buy it.
  • NIMBL prices by geographic zone and includes up to 60 days of emergency treatment outside the selected area.
  • Dental has a six-month waiting period; maternity is available to groups only with a 12-month wait.

The module matrix

NIMBL Health is an international private medical insurance (IPMI) plan built from modules rather than tiers. You start with the core, choose how high its annual cap should be and how large a deductible you will carry, and then decide which optional modules to add. That makes it closer in spirit to a pick-and-mix than to a ladder.

ModuleStructure
CoreInpatient treatment, cancer and emergency dental, up to the selected annual cap
OutpatientOptional; separate caps and a US$0, 100, 300 or 500 deductible choice
DentalOptional routine and major treatment; six-month waiting period
Assistance and evacuationOptional; benefits subject to the selected core cap
MaternityGroups only; 12-month waiting period

The core cap comes in four sizes, from US$250,000 to US$3,000,000, and the core deductible in five, from nil to US$10,000. Those two choices do most of the work in setting the premium.

How to read the core cap and deductible

The US$250,000 cap is low by international standards and is best understood as a top-up or catastrophe layer for someone who already has local cover; the US$1,000,000 to US$3,000,000 caps are in the range most expats choose for a main plan. Within the core, NIMBL publishes day-patient care, organ transplant up to a US$500,000 lifetime limit, hospice and terminal care up to US$200,000 lifetime, and emergency dental up to US$10,000.

Evacuation is an optional module here, not part of the core, and its benefits are subject to the core cap you select. If being moved to another country for treatment is part of why you want international cover, add the module and choose a cap that leaves room for it.

Outpatient is also optional, with its own caps and its own smaller deductible. Our guide to inpatient versus outpatient cover explains whether it is worth adding, and the EMEA cost guide covers how deductibles move the premium.

Who stands behind the plan

HealthCare International is the Managing General Agent that designs and administers NIMBL; the policies are underwritten by Mutuelle Générale de l'Éducation Nationale (MGEN). HealthCare International Europe GmbH – UK Branch is an appointed representative of FCA-authorised HealthCare International Global Network Ltd. For a buyer in Europe, that means a French mutual insurer carrying the risk and a UK regulatory footprint on the distribution side.

Using NIMBL from the Gulf or Europe

The zone-based area is the first thing to settle. Because NIMBL prices by geographic zone, a resident of Spain, Portugal, Germany or the United Kingdom should ask which zone their country falls in and whether a zone that stops at Europe is cheaper than one that includes the Gulf, and vice versa for a resident of the UAE, Saudi Arabia, Qatar or Bahrain. The 60 days of emergency treatment outside the selected area covers short trips in either direction, but not planned treatment. Our guide to Europe regional versus worldwide cover explains how to weigh a narrower zone. Caps and deductibles are published in US dollars.

The eligibility rule matters for IPMIEMEA's countries in two ways. You must be living outside your country of nationality, so a British national in the UK or a Spaniard in Spain cannot buy it; it is for expats only. And the maximum entry age of 64 rules it out for older retirees arriving in southern Europe.

Gulf residents generally need a locally compliant policy, usually arranged by the employer, with an international plan bought on top or by people outside the local scheme. The US$250,000 core with a chosen deductible is an obvious top-up shape over a local employer policy; the larger caps suit a main plan. Check the current rule where you live and read our guide to mandatory Gulf health insurance and top-up cover.

Who NIMBL suits

A good fit for an expat under 65 who wants to assemble exactly the cover they need, who is happy to carry a deductible to keep the premium down, and who is comfortable with full medical underwriting. The modular design works particularly well as a top-up over local Gulf cover. Compare alternatives if you want evacuation and outpatient in the core rather than as add-ons, if you are over the entry age, if you live in your country of nationality, or if you would prefer a moratorium route. Frequently asked questions

How is HCI NIMBL Health structured?
As modules. The core covers inpatient treatment, cancer and emergency dental up to a selected annual cap of US$250,000, US$1,000,000, US$2,000,000 or US$3,000,000, with a core deductible of US$0, 500, 1,000, 5,000 or 10,000. Outpatient, dental and assistance/evacuation are optional modules; maternity is for groups only.
Who can apply for NIMBL?
The published eligibility is living outside your country of nationality, with a maximum entry age of 64. The plan is subject to full medical underwriting, and the exact country zone and exclusions are set in the policy wording.
Is evacuation included in NIMBL?
Not in the core. Assistance and evacuation is an optional module, and its benefits are subject to the core cap you select. The core does include up to 60 days of emergency treatment outside the selected geographic area.
What are the waiting periods on NIMBL?

Does NIMBL suit expats in the Gulf and Europe?
