Bupa Global health insurance for expats in the Gulf and Europe

Bupa Global sits at the premium end of international health insurance: a five-plan ladder with limits in sterling, direct access to specialists and an unlimited top plan. IPMIEMEA explains how to read the ladder and which area option suits the Gulf and Europe.

Last updated: 13 October 2026 · Reviewed by IPMIEMEA
In short: Bupa Global is a premium international health insurer with a five-plan ladder, Major Medical, Select, Premier, Elite and Ultimate, limits published in sterling from £1,000,000 to unlimited, and no GP referral needed to see specialists. It suits expats in the Gulf and Europe who want very high limits and strong cancer and mental-health cover, and are comfortable with full medical underwriting and an 18-month maternity wait.
Key takeaways
  • The ladder is not ordered by limit: Major Medical has £2,000,000 but lacks the day-to-day benefits Select and Premier add.
  • Routine dental needs Premier or above after six months; maternity and fertility need Elite or Ultimate after 18 months.
  • Bupa reviews your declared history and may cover, load, exclude or restrict a condition; there is no moratorium route.
  • The area option excluding the USA and Europe is unusable for European residents and removes cover on trips home for Gulf expats.
  • Blua virtual GP consultations and a Second Medical Opinion service are included at no extra cost on every plan.

Reading the five-plan ladder

Bupa Global is the international arm of Bupa. Its individual range is a ladder of five international private medical insurance (IPMI) plans, running from hospital-focused cover to an Ultimate plan with no overall annual limit. The exact plans and benefits vary by country of residence, so the figures below are Bupa's published 2026 range; confirm what applies where you live.

The ladder is not ordered strictly by annual limit. Major Medical has a higher limit than Select or Premier, but those two add day-to-day benefits that Major Medical does not have. Read the ladder by what each plan adds, then check the limit.

PlanAnnual limitWhat it adds
Major Medical£2,000,000Hospital-focused protection for large medical events
Select£1,000,000Day-to-day benefits: health screening, physiotherapy, mental health, complementary therapies
Premier£1,500,000Select benefits at higher limits, plus optical and dental
Elite£3,000,000Maternity and assisted fertility treatment
UltimateUnlimitedNo overall limit, Lifecare Concierge Manager, two children to age 16 at no extra cost (subject to underwriting)
If you want routine dental you need Premier or above. If you want maternity or fertility you need Elite or above. The higher limit on Major Medical does not buy either.

Eighteen months is at the long end of the market for maternity; Now Health WorldCare Apex, for comparison, uses 12. If a family is part of the plan, the waiting period matters more than the headline benefit.

On medical history, Bupa publishes a clear position. You declare every illness or injury for which you had medication, advice, treatment or symptoms before joining. Bupa's medical team reviews it and sets the terms: a pre-existing condition may be covered, possibly for an extra premium, excluded, or restricted in some other way. Anything not disclosed on the application is not covered. Children can be added at the same level of cover, subject to underwriting. In market terms this is full medical underwriting, which gives certainty from day one and the possibility that a declared condition is accepted; there is no moratorium route. Our guide to pre-existing conditions explains the difference.

Using Bupa Global from the Gulf or Europe

Bupa's limits are published in sterling, which suits anyone paid or budgeting in pounds, and the area choice is one of the biggest price levers on the plan. Every plan offers worldwide cover, with or without the USA. Select, Premier and Elite also offer a third option: worldwide excluding the USA and Europe, including the United Kingdom.

That third option needs care. For a resident of Spain, Portugal, Germany or the United Kingdom it is not usable, because it removes cover where you live. For an expat in the UAE, Saudi Arabia, Qatar or Bahrain it lowers the premium, but only makes sense if you will never want treatment on a trip home to Europe. IPMIEMEA's view is that most Gulf-based Europeans are better served by worldwide excluding the USA. Our guide to Europe regional versus worldwide cover works through the choice.

Gulf states generally require residents to hold a locally compliant health policy, normally arranged by the employer, and a Bupa Global plan is typically bought as a top-up or by people outside the local scheme. Check the current rule with your employer or the local regulator, and see our guide to mandatory Gulf health insurance and top-up cover. Because Bupa's plans and benefits vary by country of residence, ask at quote exactly which table of benefits applies to your country.

Who Bupa Global suits

A strong fit if you want very high or unlimited annual limits, no-referral access to specialists, strong cancer and mental-health cover and a large network, with virtual GP access on every plan and a concierge at the top of the range. Sterling pricing is a bonus for UK-linked expats.

Compare alternatives if price is the main driver, because premium positioning usually comes with a premium price; if you need maternity or dental sooner than the 18- and 6-month waits allow; if you would prefer a moratorium underwriting option; or if you only need cover in one region. Cigna Global and Allianz Care are the usual comparisons, and Nomi ranks Bupa against the whole market on your own details. Our EMEA cost guide explains what moves the price.

Frequently asked questions

What are Bupa Global's plan levels?
Five: Major Medical (£2,000,000 annual limit, hospital-focused), Select (£1,000,000, adds day-to-day benefits), Premier (£1,500,000, adds optical and dental), Elite (£3,000,000, adds maternity and fertility) and Ultimate (no overall annual limit, with a Lifecare Concierge Manager).
Does Bupa Global cover pre-existing conditions?
Possibly. You declare your full medical history when you apply. Bupa's medical team reviews it and may cover a pre-existing condition, sometimes for an extra premium, exclude it, or apply other restrictions. Conditions you do not disclose are not covered.
Which Bupa Global area of cover suits an expat in the Gulf or Europe?
Worldwide excluding the USA is available on every plan and includes both the Gulf and Europe. The option that also excludes Europe and the UK, available on Select, Premier and Elite, is cheaper but removes cover in Europe entirely, so IPMIEMEA suggests it only for Gulf residents who will never seek treatment in Europe.
Does Bupa Global cover maternity?
Yes, on Elite and Ultimate, once the mother has been on the plan for 18 months. Pregnancy and childbirth, including complications and Caesarean sections, are covered, with limitations on Elite. Assisted fertility treatment is also covered on those plans after 18 months.
Do I need a GP referral to see a specialist with Bupa Global?
No. Bupa Global gives direct access to recognised private providers, clinics and hospitals within your area of cover without a referral, including cancer specialists and cardiologists. Cover is the same at home and abroad within the area you choose.
What currency is Bupa Global priced in?
Bupa Global publishes its plan limits in pounds sterling, from £1,000,000 on Select to unlimited on Ultimate. Plans, benefits and limits vary by country of residence, so confirm the table of benefits that applies to your country at quote.
